ABSTRACT

This study investigated the influence of Principals’ Human Resource Management Strategies on Teachers’ Job Performance in Secondary Schools in Benue State. The study focused on variables such as supervision, communication, promotion and in-service training. Four research questions and four corresponding hypotheses guided the study. The survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all the 5,763 secondary school teachers of all the secondary schools in Benue State. A sample size of 374 respondents was drawn from the population using the Taro Yamane formula for sample size determination. Multistage sampling procedure consisting of purposive, proportionate stratified random sampling technique and simple random sampling technique was used to arrive at the sample used for the study. A 20-item questionnaire titled’ Influence of Principals’ Human Resource Management on Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (IPHRMSTJPQ) was used as instrument for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by experts from the Department of Educational Foundations and General Studies (EFOGENS), University of Agriculture Makurdi. The reliability coefficient obtained for the instrument was 0.78. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the four (4) research questions, while chi-square statistic was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that supervision strategy had significant influence on teachers’ job performance. The findings also revealed that, communication, promotion and in-service training strategies had significant influence on teachers’ job performance. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that since principals’ human resource management strategies influence teachers’ job performance, the strategies of human resource management should be considered a priority by principals for achieving quality human resource management; the Ministry of Education authorities should remember that effective job performance on the part of teachers is a pre-condition for making a successful school.
