ABSTRACT

Languages in contact have always left effects on one another; more especially however, is the telling effects such contacts have on the minority or local languages. Globalization has made such a contact between an international language and the so called indigenous language(s) ever more telling; with disastrous consequences on the minority/indigenous languages. Today, we live with the devastating experience of language endangerment and extinction. This paper shows how translation could prove invaluable in gingering interest in, and checking the threats minority languages have come under in our globalized community. The paper points out how the Tiv language is on the path of being revived with the ongoing translation by the Watch Tower Society of Pennsylvania, of Bible-based literature into the language.

ABSTRACT

Nigeria the most populous country in Africa has a myriad of opportunities for economic development ranging from agriculture to national resources. Ironically, the country is ranked among the poorest in the world despite the large volumes of crude oil she exports daily. Besides, the country is bedeviled with youth restiveness, high poverty and unemployment rates in recent years. Entrepreneurship education has been introduced into the country’s educational system at all levels in a bid to curb the above mishaps and to encourage graduates at all levels to take advantage of the available opportunities and not only become self-employed but also become employers of labour thereby reducing poverty, unemployment, youth restiveness and meaningfully contribute to national economic development. The implementation of entrepreneurship education curriculum in the country is however confronted with bottlenecks like shortage of teachers, inadequate teaching materials/infrastructure, wage-earner mentality, population explosion and ignorance of school administrators among other things. This paper discusses the concepts, the nexus, the need for effective implementation of entrepreneurship education curriculum, the challenges and suggests the way forward.

ABSTRACT

The study sought to establish the relationship between corporate social responsibility(CSR) practice and financial performance of firms listed on the stock market in the cement manufacturing sub sector in Nigeria. Secondary data was obtained from the audited financial reports of the companies for the period 2014 to 2018. Corporate social responsibility score was obtained using content analysis of reports of the companies on various components of corporate social responsibility as reported in their audited financial reports. A multiple regression model was established to determine the relationship between the two variables. Control variables of manufacturing efficiency and capital intensity were also introduced in the regression model. The results indicated the existence of a positive and significant relationship between the independent variables (corporate social responsibility score, manufacturing efficiency and capital intensity) used in the model and the dependent variable firm performance (return on assets). Based on the finding, the study recommended among others that,CSR should now be considered as an investment not as expenditure therefore companies should invest in performing CSR because if firms do so they will get more financial benefits than what is invested in CSR and companies should not only invest on CSR but also disclose its spending on CSR to all stakeholders about, how, where and what amount they have invested in CSR.

Keywords: Corporate social responsibility; Financial performance; Manufacturing, Efficiency, Capital Intensity.

ABSTRACT

Nigeria is blessed with vast arable land, a vibrant manpower and a fairly good climate to engage productively in agriculture. Indeed, before the mid 1970s, agriculture was the mainstay of the nation’s economy. Sadly, today, agriculture is relegated to the background in Nigeria. For this wrong judgement, the country is paying heavily. Lately, there have been calls, both by the government, corporate bodies and even well meaning individuals, for a return to agriculture to get Nigeria back on her feet. The thrust of this paper is to show how the effective use of indigenous languages deployed in areas such as: education, (re)orientation, instruction, provision of guidelines and general information dissemination among others, could greatly boost agriculture in the country. In particular, this paper argues that providing Tiv farmers with needed awareness, help, instruction, (re)orientation, guidelines and such other agricultural extension services in the native language, (Tiv), would go a long way to enhancing agricultural growth not only in Benue State, but in the North-Central Nigeria as a whole.

ABSTRACT

This research surveyed computer skills among graduating Computer Science Education (CSE) students in Colleges of Education in Benue state. The study was guided by four research questions. A survey design was used for the study. The population consisted of 235 graduating CSE students from the three Colleges of Education in Benue state that offer the CSE programme. A random sampling technique was used in drawing a sample of 150 respondents from the Population. An instrument titled computer skills possessed by graduating CSE students in Colleges of Education in Benue state was administered on the respondents. Data collected were analysed using simple percentages. The findings showed that most graduating CSE students did not possess computer skills while a few did. The findings further showed that out of the few that possessed computer skills a larger percentage (73.08%) possessed fundamental computer skills, a smaller percentage (23.04%) possessed basic computer skills while a very small percentage (3.85%) possessed intermediate computer skills. Two reasons were responsible for lack of computer skills among graduating CSE students in Colleges of Education in Benue state these are lack of sufficient equipment in computer laboratories and lack of exposure to practical lessons. The researcher recommended that all graduating students of CSE programme be made to acquire computer skills before they are allowed to graduate. He also advised the affected institutions to liaise with TETFund and proprietors to equip their computer laboratory for training of CSE students. The NCCE was also urged to ensure strict compliance with its minimum standards during accreditation of the CSE programme.
