ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to determine the effects of hands-on learning on achievement and attitude of students in Basic Technology in Katsina-Ala, Benue State. A total of 195 JSSII students were selected for this study. Quasi experimental design was used for the study. Intact classes were used for both control and experimental groups. Two instruments – Basic Technology Achievement Test (BTAT) and Students Attitude towards Basic Technology Inventory (SABTI) were used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The reliability coefficient yielded an r=0.75 for the BTAT and an r=0.69 for the SABTI. The findings of the research among others included: the use of hands-on learning to teach Basic Technology enhanced students’ achievement than those taught using the lecture method, the attitude towards Basic Technology of students taught using hands-on activities is more than those taught using the lecture method. Based on these findings, the study recommended among others, that, the use of hands-on learning method of teaching is an effective approach; therefore, it should be implemented in the teaching of Basic Technology at all levels; Government/Proprietors should provide and equip Basic Technology laboratories in their schools to enhance the teaching of Basic Technology. Students on their part, should see the laboratory as one of the best means/resources for learning science and technology that enhances skill acquisition which promotes knowledge.

ABSTRACT

Nigeria is a developing country and evidence on ground shows that majority of her citizens are poor. The World Bank Poverty Report of 2014, for instance, attest to this fact. Undoubtedly, these sceneries exert devastating consequences on the nation’s economic development and by extension, on her quest for self-reliance. The purpose of this article in the light of the foregoing was to highlight the crucial roles of entrepreneurship education as well as science and technology education as the alternative options which Nigeria could harness to fast-track her economic development and also achieve the desired self-reliance for overall national development. An opinion based work, the article reviewed literature relevant to the key concepts of the work and concludes that, Entrepreneurship, Science and Technology Education, which is a precondition for economic and self-reliance has been on decline as a result of neglect, poor funding, under staffing, among others. Hence the need for enhancement of the program to check these challenges in order to form a solid foundation for the economic development of the nation. It was thus suggested among other measures that; adequate funds be made available by government to acquire and equip laboratories/workshops, entrepreneurship, science and technology education should be made a core course with practical’s to enhance the teaching and learning of entrepreneurship, science and technology, etc. with this entrepreneurship, science and technology education will be a great step to Nigeria’s goal for development and self-reliance.

ABSTRACT

Tiv youths of today have discarded and abandoned Tiv values. The way members of the society relate and interact with one another today is different from what used to be the norm. In the past, relationship among members of the society was based on the values of honesty, sanctity of life and dignity of the human person, and respect for elders. The Tiv society of the past valued, just reward for labour, hard work and dignity of labour. These values have given way to corruption, aggressiveness, killing, armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, impatience, greed and the desire to get rich quick, through foul means. This paper posits that this value degeneration is as a result of imbibing western education, without character and value training. The effect of this is the complete erosion of the Tiv value system, leading the society to the brink of collapse.

The challenges of ICT in Science Education are discussed, among which is that ICT facilities are expensive and unaffordable to many individuals, private and some government establishments. Ways of improving ICT in Science Education are discussed and the paper recommends that government should initiate ways of fostering the literacy skills of Science teachers, by sponsoring them to workshops and short term programmes. ABSTRACT

The study examined the media reportage of farmers-herders crisis in Nigeria. Three newspapers, (The Sun, Vanguard and The Nation) were randomly selected for analysis. The period covered was January to December, 2019. Variables measured include nature of covered issues, frequency of reportage, space allocated, placement and frames. Frequency counts, percentages and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyse the collected data. Calamity/killing (40%) was the most covered issue across the papers, while Vanguard newspaper had the highest (48.2%) reportage of and largest (470cm2) space allotment to the issue. The paper also gave the issue more (60.7%) prominence than other newspapers. More (52.0%) of the issues reported had ethnic slants in their frames, with Vanguard having the largest proportion (40.0%). There was significant coverage of farmers/herders crises across the newspapers (F=3.418, P<0.05). It is noted that the current framing of herdsmen-farmers conflict in the newspapers could aggravate the existing tension along ethnic lines. It is recommended that newspaper editors should be more socially responsible in their publications.

ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on premarital sex and teenage pregnancy, as it affects children’s wellbeing in our society. The term premarital sex has been defined as sex before marriage or out of wedlock. Two types of premarital sex were identified to include homosexual and heterosexual. Also, the factors influencing adolescent sexual behaviour such as age, gender, parents, school type and the mass media were properly examined. The paper also defined teenage as a period of adolescence, a period of life during which the growing individual makes the transition from childhood to adulthood. Teenage pregnancy has also been defined as pregnancy during the adolescent stage. Risks such as maternal morbidity, maternal mortality, toxaemia, low educational background, unemployment and poverty were identified to be associated with teenage pregnancy. Finally, preventive measures to control unwanted pregnancy such as abstinence, coitus interruptus, and barrier methods among others were recommended as necessary tools to reduce the unhealthy recurrence in the society.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the impact of Students ‘Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) on entrepreneurship development in Nigeria. It underscores the importance of SIWES training among students of tertiary institutions, as a road map for entrepreneurship development thereby reducing the ever-growing rate of unemployment in Nigeria. By way of qualitative analysis, predicated on secondary sources, the paper posits that SIWES plays an important role in shaping a nation’s intellectual human capital in today’s world, despite its challenges such as inadequate training of technicians, insufficient exposure to practical work, poor information flow between schools and supervisors, unnecessary policy reviews and discontinuity, insufficient personnel motivation etc. The paper submits amongst others that Government should encourage the SIWES scheme by funding the programme adequately.
