ABSTRACT

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has in recent years played vital roles in our society, by greatly improving the way things are done. In education, ICT has improved the quality of education as it has increased access to educational resources and enabled the provision of varied teaching methods and strategies. Online and distant learning is now possible as well as extended through ICT. Tools for sharing of resources and platforms for collaboration are some of the benefits of ICT in education. ICT provides the needed motivation, interactivity and student-centered environment, helping students to learn better. Using ICT enables feedback when assessments are given; there is also possibility of re-use and authentication of assessments. ICT has many benefits for the teacher, the student and assessment when incorporated into the educational system. The aim of this paper is to review available evidences on the use of ICT in education particularly, science education. The paper presents possible areas ICT is used in science education as well as the benefits derived from such usage. ABSTRACT

There is a strong relationship between climate and agricultural production. Understanding the climatic changes around us and how they affect agricultural productivity and livelihood will ensure food security. Climate change and global warming are the current global problems facing many countries, including Nigeria. Causes of climate change in Nigeria include emission of greenhouse gases from gas flaring, open burning, vehicle emissions, deforestation and use of solid fuel for cooking. Nigeria is still practicing rain fed agriculture which renders her vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Severe climate events such as flooding, extreme heat and drought have led to soil degradation which results in low crop yields. Decline in agricultural productivity discourages farmers and may lead to change in livelihood, especially in rural settings. This can also lead to migration from rural to urban regions thereby affecting development of rural regions in the country. This paper discusses the causes, effects and mitigation of the effects of climate change in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

The twenty-first century is generally referred to as information age. This is an age in which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has revolutionized communications and the speed of information dissemination. ICT refers to a broad field encompassing computers, communication equipment and services rendered by them. The church has been benefitting from ICT facilities in times past. It can benefit more from the manifold possibilities of ICT in our time. This paper attempts to review available evidences on how ICT has revolutionized communications in our society, particularly as it relates to actualizing the church’s mission. In an attempt to do so, the paper looks at ICT briefly and the role it plays in achieving church’s ministry. ICTs, like the print media, television, cell phone, computer and the internet have greatly enhanced church ministry, speeding up communications, enlarging outreaches and getting feedback quickly. ICT has now made it possible to have a church without walls, thus overcoming the problems of distance and space. Advantages and disadvantages associated with the usage of ICT are outlined, as the church needs to know them to effectively use ICT. From the paper, it is clear that if ICT is adequately used, it will help the church to fulfill her threefold mission of evangelism, edification and worship. Suggestions are finally made for a better and smooth usage of ICT by churches.

ABSTRACT

Youth restiveness is a worrisome issue in most countries of the world, Nigeria inclusive. The paper defines youth as people within the age bracket of 18-35 years, who are yet to be considered as adults in the society. The paper highlights the causes of youth restiveness which include unemployment, bad governance, poverty, inadequate communication and information flow. The paper considers the effects of youth restiveness as being multi-dimensional, which include destruction of life and infrastructure, and ravaging the requisite human capital for producing the nation’s economic fortunes. The paper suggests ways of curbing youth restiveness and maintains that counseling is a service that could be applied by the counselor to modify behaviour in youth, which is detrimental to the society. The paper recommends ways of curbing restiveness in youths such as government and family providing security and good care for the youth, and engaging them in governance at all levels of government.

Abstract

The importance of children education in any given society is very critical to the social and economic development of the society, particularly for its future pivotal development. To deny the child his/her right to education is to deny the nation its critical development. The needs of the child ranging from feeding, clothing, accommodation and capacity hang on the shoulders of adults, parents, guardians and the government. Because of their vulnerability, they cannot cater for themselves hence they must be provided guidance, training and care for meaningful contribution in the society. It was in recognition of this, that the right of children education was entrenched in several international and domestic legal instruments. However, there is the problem of implementation and enforcement of these extant laws as there are still so many uneducated, unfed, and tattered children in the streets engaged in hawking, child labour, begging and so on. And the resultant effect of this is that the social and economic landscapes of the future generation in Nigeria cannot be guaranteed. This paper therefore discusses the relevant laws and policies on children’s education in Nigeria. It also examines the challenges faced in effective implementation of these laws and concludes that there is a lack of proper mechanism to effectively entrench the provision of the various instruments. Finally, the paper recommends the provision of enforcement machinery that will ensure implementation and the need to address the issue of poverty.

ABSTRACT

This review ex-rays some human activities and their consequences on the earth’s surface; human impact on vegetation, soil, oceans and seas, landscape and the process of urbanization were extensively dealt with. The article pointed out the adverse effects of man’s activities on the land which result into soil erosion, soil compaction, and increased evaporation, among others. Persistent cutting down of trees has caused droughts and gradual shift in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), thus resulting into climate change globally. The work also pointed out some of the consequences of the misuse of oceans and seas such as dumping of toxic waste, industrial waste and oil spillage, which has adverse effect on aquatic life. The process of urbanization was also considered with the phenomenon giving examples of some cities in Nigeria. Finally, the work suggested careful interference with natural resources, to avoid over usages as well as emphasizing best ways of environmental protection.

ABSTRACT

This study looks at the effects of school location on the academic performance of students in essay writing in senior secondary schools in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. One research question and hypothesis guided the study. The study adopted the Ex-post-facto research design. The population of the study consisted of 2000 senior secondary II students. A sample of 200 students was drawn from four sampled schools. Stratified random sampling was used to select two schools each from urban and rural areas while simple random sampling was used to select one contact class of SSII student to form participants in each of the four sampled schools. Data were collected using writing performance test. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research question while t-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that students in urban schools outperformed their counterparts in rural schools in writing (0.00<0.05). Based on the findings, it was recommended that experienced and qualified teachers should be posted to schools in rural areas to boost the teaching of writing skills. Students should be motivated towards effective writing by giving them regular assessmentpractice, marking and returning same to students with encouraging comments; government should provide social amenities in the rural areas to attract teachers posted to such areas as well asteaching/learning materials, to ease the teaching/learning of writing skills.
